The Institute for Child Healthcare Africa (ICHA) has developed a new online learning module, under the leadership of Dr Scott Guthrie, focused on SALSA (Surfactant Administration through Laryngeal or Supraglottic Airways)—a technique for administering surfactant to newborns with respiratory distress.

Why Online Learning
One of the goals of ICHA’s educational work is to be a catalyst, making practical, evidence-based neonatal knowledge available beyond the classroom. Scott O. Guthrie, M.D., is a professor of clinical pediatrics at University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center and Director of Neonatal Quality and Research at Children’s at Erlanger. His research seeks to improve outcomes for neonates throughout Tennessee and around the world, to investigate minimally invasive surfactant therapies and probiotics for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis, and to develop a user-centered ventilator weaning protocol.
Dr. Scott is also an instructor at ICHA’s Tiny Feet Big Steps African Neonatology Conferences and currently serves as an ICHA-US Board Member. He is passionate about building the capacity of neonatologists and strengthening neonatal care across Africa.
